जिम कॉर्बेट राष्ट्रीय उद्यान भारत का सबसे पुराना राष्ट्रीय पार्क है और १९३६ में लुप्तप्राय बंगाल बाघ की रक्षा के लिए हैंली नेशनल पार्क के रूप में स्थापित किया गया था। यह उत्तराखण्ड के नैनीताल जिले में स्थित है और इसका नाम जिम कॉर्बेट के नाम पर रखा गया था जिन्होंने इसकी स्थापना में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी। बाघ परियोजना पहल के तहत आने वाला यह पहला पार्क था। यह एक गौरवशाली पशु विहार है। यह रामगंगा की पातलीदून घाटी में १३१८.५४ वर्ग किलोमीटर में बसा हुआ है जिसके अंतर्गत ८२१.९९ वर्ग किलोमीटर का जिम कॉर्बेट व्याघ्र संरक्षित क्षेत्र भी आता है।
पार्क में उप-हिमालयन बेल्ट की भौगोलिक और पारिस्थितिक विशेषताएं हैं। यह एक इकोटोरिज़्म गंतव्य भी है और यहाँ पौधों की 488 प्रजातियां और जीवों की एक विविधता है। पर्यटन की गतिविधियों में वृद्धि और अन्य समस्याएं पार्क के पारिस्थितिक संतुलन के लिए एक गंभीर चुनौती पेश कर रहीं हैं।
कॉर्बेट एक लंबे समय के लिए पर्यटकों और वन्यजीव प्रेमियों के लिए अड्डा रहा है। कोर्बेट टाइगर रिजर्व के चयनित क्षेत्रों में ही पर्यटन गतिविधि को अनुमति दी जाती है ताकि लोगों को इसके शानदार परिदृश्य और विविध वन्यजीव देखने का मौका मिले। हाल के वर्षों में यहां आने वाले लोगों की संख्या में नाटकीय रूप से वृद्धि हुई है। वर्तमान में, हर मौसम में 100000 से अधिक आगंतुक पार्क में आते हैं।
कॉर्बेट नेशनल पार्क में ५२०.८ वर्ग किमी (२०१.१ वर्ग मील) में पहाड़ी, नदी के बेल्ट, दलदलीय गड्ढे, घास के मैदान और एक बड़ी झील शामिल है। ऊंचाई १,३०० से 4,००० फीट (४०० से १,२२० मीटर) तक होती है। यहाँ शीतकालीन रातें ठंडी होती हैं लेकिन दिन धूपदार और गरम होते हैं। यहाँ जुलाई से सितंबर तक बारिश होती है।
घने नम पर्णपाती वन में मुख्य रूप से साल, हल्दु, पीपल, रोहिनी और आम के पेड़ होते हैं। जंगल पार्क का लगभग 73% हिस्सा घेरते हैं, इस क्षेत्र में 10% घास के मैदान होते हैं। यहाँ ११० पेड़ की पप्रजातियाँ, ५० स्तनधारियों की प्रजातियाँ, ५८० पक्षी प्रजातियां और २५ सरीसृप प्रजातियां हैं।
पशु
पार्कयहाँ पर शेर, हाथी, भालू, बाघ, सुअर, हिरन, चीतल, साँभर, पांडा, काकड़, नीलगाय, घुरल और चीता आदि ‘वन्य प्राणी’ अधिक संख्या में मिलते हैं। इसी तरह इस वन में अजगर तथा कई प्रकार के साँप भी निवास करते हैं। जहाँ इस वन्य पशु विहार में अनेक प्रकार के भयानक जन्तु पाये जाते हैं, वहाँ इस पार्क में लगभग ६०० रंग – बिरंगे पक्षियों की जातियाँ भी दिखाई देती हैं। यह देश एक ऐसा अभयारण है जिसमें वन्य जन्तुओं की अनेक जातियाँ – प्रजातियों के साथ पक्षियों का भी आधिक्य रहता है। आज विश्व का ऐसा कोई कोना नहीं है, जहाँ के पर्यटक इस पार्क को देखने नहीं आते हों।
अंग्रेज वन्य जन्तुओं की रक्षा करने के भी शौकीन थे। सन् १९३५ में रामगंगा के इस अंचल को वन्य पशुओं के रक्षार्थ सुरक्षित किया गया। उस समय के गवर्नर मालकम हेली के नाम पर इस पार्क का नाम ‘हेली नेशनल पार्क’ रखा गया। स्वतंत्रता मिलने के बाद इस पार्क का नाम ‘रामगंगा नेशनल पार्क’ रख दिया गया। स्वतंत्रता के बाद विश्व में जिम कार्बेट नाम एक प्रसिद्ध शिकारी के रूप में फैल गया था। जिम कार्बेट जहाँ अचूक निशानेबाज थे वहीं वन्य पशुओं के प्रिय साथी भी थे। कुमाऊँ के कई आदमखोर शेरों को उन्होंने मारकर सैकड़ों लोगों की जानें बचायी थी। हजारों को भय से मुक्त करवाया था। गढ़वाल में भी एक आदमखोर शेर ने कई लोगों की जानें ले ली थी। उस आदमखोर को भी जिम कार्बेट ने ही मारा था। वह आदमखोर गढ़वाल के रुद्र प्रयाग के आस-पास कई लोगों को मार चुका था। जिम कार्बेट ने ‘द मैन ईटर आॅफ रुद्र प्रयाग’ नाम की पुस्तकें लिखीं।
भारत सरकार ने जब जिम कार्बेट की लोकप्रियता को समझा और यह अनुभव किया कि उनका कार्यक्षेत्र बी यही अंचल था तो सन् १९५७ में इस पार्क का नाम ‘जिम कार्बेट नेशनल पार्क’ रख दिया गया और जिम कार्बेट नेशनल पार्क जाने वाले पर्यटक इसी मार्ग से जाते हैं। नैनीताल से आनेवाले पर्यटक इस संग्रहालय को देखकर ही आगे बढ़ते हैं।
जिम कार्बेट
जिम कार्बेट का पूरा नाम जेम्स एडवर्ड कार्बेट था। इनका जन्म २५ जुलाई १८७५ ई. में हुआ था।
जिम कार्बेट बचपन से ही बहुत मेहनती और नीडर व्यक्ति थे। उन्होंने कई काम किये। इन्होंने ड्राइवरी, स्टेशन मास्टरी तथा सेना में भी काम किया और अनेत में ट्रान्सपोर्ट अधिकारी तक बने परन्तु उन्हें वन्य पशुओं का प्रेम अपनी ओर आकर्षित करता रहा। जब भी उन्हें समय मिलता, वे कुमाऊँ के वनों में घूमने निकल जाते थे। वन्य पशुओं को बहुत प्यार करते। जो वन्य जन्तु मनुष्य का दुश्मन हो जाता – उसे वे मार देते थे।
जिम कार्बेट के पिता ‘मैथ्यू एण्ड सन्स’ नामक भवन बनाने वाली कम्पनी में हिस्सेदारा थे। गर्मियों में जिम कार्बेट का परिवार अयायरपाटा स्थित ‘गुर्नी हाऊस’ में रहता था। वे उस मकान में १९४५ तक रहे। ठंडियों में कार्बेट परिवार कालढूँगी वाले अपने मकान में आ जाते थे। १९४७ में जिम कार्बेट अपनी बहन के साथ केनिया चले गये थे। वे वहीं बस गये थे। केनिया में ही अस्सी वर्ष की अवस्था में उनका देहान्त हो गया।
